Connecting Patients, Payers,
and Providers
John D. Halamka, MD, MS, ("Life as a Healthcare CIO" Blog) is Chief Information Officer of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Chief Information Officer and Associate Dean for Educational Technology at Harvard Medical School, Chairman of the New England Health Electronic Data Interchange Network (NEHEN), CEO of MA-Share, Chair of the Healthcare Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP), and a practicing Emergency Physician.
Dr. Halamka is a trailblazing proponent of connected healthcare and a longtime InterSystems customer. He gave this presentation as a keynote address at InterSystems DEVCON2007.
In this presentation, Dr. Halamka talks about what progress has been made towards achieving connected healthcare in the United States – and what more needs to be done. He discusses how government, the healthcare industry, and patients all have roles to play in realizing the vision of connected healthcare. These roles range from setting standards for the exchange of healthcare information, to developing “use cases” that demonstrate the efficacy of those standards, to the creation and maintenance of personal health records.
