WINDSOR, UK, 26th FEBRUARY, 2025 InterSystems, a creative data technology provider managing over one billion healthcare records globally, has announced that NHS Ayrshire & Arran, one of Scotland’s leading health boards, has transitioned to InterSystems TrakCare as a Service, the hosted version of InterSystems unified healthcare information system, TrakCare. This strategic move is aligned with Scotland's national health digital strategy, advocating a cloud-first approach to modernise healthcare IT infrastructure.

Following the phased implementation, InterSystems TrakCare is now hosted in a secure, high-availability cloud environment, providing NHS Ayrshire & Arran with numerous operational advantages. The service eliminates the complexity of managing physical IT infrastructure, allowing IT professionals to boost the operational efficiency of clinical systems, and enabling clinician users to focus their full attention on improving patient care.

With TrakCare hosted in the cloud, NHS Ayrshire & Arran benefits from robust security measures, compliance with the latest health data protection standards, and guaranteed service levels. The managed service ensures 24/7/365 availability, with comprehensive support and maintenance, delivered by InterSystems, helping to reduce downtime and enhance care delivery continuity.

In addition, by integrating real-time data across the healthcare continuum, the system enhances clinical decision-making and patient management, supporting better health outcomes. As NHS Ayrshire & Arran grows, TrakCare as a Service can easily scale to meet increasing demands without significant additional investment in physical infrastructure.

To ensure success, technical staff were involved from the outset and a robust governance structure was established. All this helped the health board understand the challenges at each stage and was also key in attaining broad business approval for go-live.

The adoption of TrakCare as a Service reflects NHS Ayrshire & Arran’s commitment to innovation and continuous improvement in healthcare delivery. "Our partnership with InterSystems and the transition to a cloud-hosted environment is a major step forward in our digital healthcare strategy," said Derek Gemmell, Assistant Director of Digital Services, NHS Ayrshire & Arran. "This technology not only supports our clinical goals but also aligns with governmental directives to enhance health service efficiency through digital means."

Colin Henderson, Country Manager, UK & Ireland, InterSystems, said: “We are thrilled to support NHS Ayrshire & Arran on their digital journey with TrakCare as a Service. The cloud-hosted solution provides a secure environment that can scale and adapt as required, to meet needs of the providers & patients in the region.”

Looking ahead, NHS Ayrshire & Arran plans to leverage the full capabilities of TrakCare to support the strategic vision for an Integrated Care Record that aims to pull together data from key systems to provide a joined-up view of the patient’s care journey accessible by all organisations and staff involved. This will improve the quality of care by providing health and care professionals with the best information on which to base their decisions. The programme will further streamline patient management processes, reduce administrative burdens, and improve the overall patient experience. Future enhancements will focus on utilising advanced analytics to track and improve patient outcomes and operational efficiencies.
